Referenda

Legislation in the United Kingdom is decided by members of parliament, who have delegated authority from their constituents to vote on legislation on their behalf. However, the government may instead decide to consult the public on a particular issue in a referendum.

Referenda may be consultative, where the government do not need to carry out the result, or binding, where the government must carry out the result, depending on the terms of the legislation under which the referendum was called.
