Council: Stop School Closures and Develop Medway-wide School Strategy
8 December 2005

Motion

The council considered a proposal submitted by Councillor Price, supported by Councillor Murray, that:

This council notes that its cabinet has been attempting to close or merge primary schools in Medway without adequate consultation or considering wider implications.

The council urges the portfolio holder for education and his cabinet colleagues to impose a moratorium on all school closures and mergers, until a comprehensive Medway-wide strategy can be drawn up. Such a strategy must give priority to:

  • a robust analysis of future school numbers which takes into account planned housing developments;
  • removing temporary accommodation;
  • reducing class sizes; and
  • finding extra users, such as a council service, a children's centre or a nursery before considering closure or amalgamation of schools.

On being put to the vote, the motion was lost.
