Council: Investigate Alleged Attempt to Limit Free Speech Against Trade Union
30 May 2002
Motion
The council considered a motion submitted by Councillor Murray supported by Councillor Godwin that:
This council deplores the decision of the portfolio holder for leisure, culture and countryside in preventing UNISON from petitioning the public during the horticultural festival at Cozenton Nursery. The petition sought support for retaining the nursery in the council's ownership.
Furthermore, the council instructs the monitoring officer to investigate whether this attempt to limit free speech constitutes a breach of the Human Rights Act 1998 and that the monitoring officer brings a report to the support services overview and scrutiny committee.
On being put to the vote, the motion was lost.
