Increase Secondary School Places in Walderslade
13 May 2002

Motion

A meeting of special council had been called to consider a recommendation from the youth and education overview and scrutiny committee which had been referred by the cabinet to a meeting of full council for decision due to the broad policy implications of the matter. Members had two options to consider:

  • whether to provide an additional form of entry at Greenacre and Walderslade Girls schools for September 2002 only, thus increasing the number of pupils receiving their first preferences; or
  • to retain the existing position, that the schools retain the existing standard number of 150 and that the number of applicants exceeding this number be offered places at other schools according to second and third preferences or to extended offers.

Councillor Edwards-Daem proposed the following, supported by Councillor Davis, proposed that:

  1. the council provides new facilities at Greenacre and Walderslade Girls schools to enable an additional form of entry for September 2002 only, and that the cost becomes an additional item to this year's education capital programme, anticipating slippage in the current programme and be funded from next year's general and education capital grant allocation; and
  2. subject to the approval of the school's adjudicator, the process by which places are allocated be as set out in paragraph 7.4 of the report.

On being put to the vote, the motion was carried.
